Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the beautiful park area surrounding the Rabindra Sarovar lake in Kolkata, India

Time

It was a little before noon. I was with some other photographers there for a different model shoot photography project. But the models and the mentor were yet to arrive, so we had some time to ourselves. So I utilised the time to shoot something solely for myself. I was roaming around the area looking for subjects- insects, birds, people, nature. It was then that this happened.

Lighting

It was natural light. The place is a natural reserve with a huge lake and lots of trees. This man was under one such tree, so there was shadow on him and harsh summer sunlight could be avoided.

Equipment

It was a handheld shot using Canon 700D and 55-250 mm lens.

Inspiration

Street is an inspiring genre in itself. Every one on the street has a different story to tell. We only need to train our 'eyes' to listen to them. This is one of my personal favourites as I have tried to convey a special message through it. The man was lying down reading a Bengali language newspaper called 'Vartamaan' meaning 'The Present Times'. And it was ironical that the man was lying down, as if to signify that the present times are sick and lying down in ailment, quite synchronous with the present socio-political situation in my and maybe many other countries.

Editing

I already took the photo in black and white, so only some minor light adjustments were made.

In my camera bag

At that time, 2 years ago, I had only Canon 700D with me. Now I also have Canon 7D, which is my primary instrument since its acquisition. Lenses include 18-55 and 55-250.

Feedback

Look intently. See street photos of the masters. Train the eyes to 'see' the story. And be fast, because unlike studio photography, a moment lost on the street is lost forever.
