The Itatiaia National Park is a Brazilian conservation unit of integral nature protection located in the Itatiaia massif, in the Mantiqueira mountain range, between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Itatiaia is the oldest national park in Brazil. It was created on June 14, 1937, in an area of 11 943 ha, which before being acquired by the Federal Treasury in 1908 belonged to Visconde de Mauá. The name Itatiaia is of Tupi origin and means cliff full of tips, pointed stone.
