Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken one Friday afternoon whilst visiting the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary. Hoping to find some birds to photograph I spotted the dragonflies which gave me this pose.

Time

The photo was taken about 2 hours before sunset on my home from the office. As dragonflies do not sit still for long everything seemed to have worked out to give me this picture.

Lighting

With the sun sitting relatively low in the sky the lighting is reflected nicely on the eyes and lights up the body to bring out the colour which contrasts nicely with the green of the twig it sat on.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 600D with a Sigma 150-500mm f1:5-6.3. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The bright colours and the wonder of how these insects move when they fly, even being able to fly backward. I can watch them for hours, But not so easy to capture on a photo.

Editing

For this photo very little post processing was done, however it was cropped to take some of the background out.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D with the Sigma 150-500mm lens 50mm Canon 1.2 prime and Canon 18-200mm

Feedback

In order to capture dragonflies you need to have lots of patience and a spot of luck to be able to capture them at rest.
