I was shooting the abandoned building in the background of this image when this boy came up to me enquiring what I was doing so I asked to take his portrait as I am predominantly a street photographer and he complied - without any instruction expressed himself by his stance in the photograph.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this portrait shot whilst I was wondering around Colchester.

Time

This shot was captured shortly after midday, I was actually photographing the derelict building behind the individual featuring in my image when he approached me and was asking what I was doing. So first and foremost being a street photographer i took the opportunity to ask him if I could take his portrait.

Lighting

I wanted the subject to be situated infront of the white bricks however also wanted to incorporate more of the derelict building to emphasise that urban style shoot feel therefore that's why in the background to the left of the subject you can see another part to the building which is a darker area that then compliments and balances out the lighter parts of my image.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon 3300 with a standard 50mm lens

Inspiration

I'm becoming more and more passionate about portraiture, but in terms of street photography because I feel like I can analyse my work better and take more striking images when Its a stranger I'm photographing, it allows me to step back and find new ways of capturing street portraits, I'm constantly challenging myself and pushing myself out of my comfort zone it also allows me to be more confident within my work and appreciate it in a different light.

Editing

I don't like to post process my images too much I prefer to get it right in camera so this step is very minimal for me, the only changes I have done was converting it from a colour digital to a black and white digital and slightly adjusting contrast and the exposure

In my camera bag

I like to carry light I usually only have my Nikon 3300 and predominantly use my 50mm lens however am getting into using my 18-70mm lens also.

Feedback

You just have to trust your instinct more than anything, everyone has their own shooting style regardless whether your aware of it or not. Think about what you want your image to communicate, what mood you want your photo to possess. More importantly shoot how you want to shoot photography has so called rules but art is art and you should practice how you want to practice develop your creativity through your own eyes, you can take inspiration from other artists but always think about how you can make it significant to you and make it your own.
