Behind The Lens

Location

between Saint John, NB and Quispamsis, NB - sits a small semi-rural spot of Rothesay, NB. In the middle on the main road through this upper class neighbourhood, sits the East Riverside Kinghurst Park. It over looks the Kennebecasis Valley River. You have to cross a set of active train tracks to walk along the small park. Recently, the town has created a shelter where picnic tables can be set up. I was under this structure while the sun was setting on May 30, 2018

Time

Sunset this time of year, in the Northern Hemisphere is after 9pm. I was here well before that time taking a number of shots as the sun slowly set behind the clouds

Lighting

I have studied lighting and the camera settings for some time, but getting just the right setting with the light still takes a lot of practice. This shot alone probably took about a dozen shots before it was just right. Adjust your settings only one at a time, then take a picture. Only when you get home and check the picture - can you see the changes to the shots.

Equipment

I was only using my primary Canon T6i with the wide angle lens. No flash and the settings were 1/4000 sec (fast shutter), ISO6400 (I could have gone lower and a slower shutter to compensate). F/14 (medium range to give it a dark look and better depth of field. I was leaning up against a steady post under the shelter; no tripod used - strictly handheld shooting with bracing against the post or my face.

Inspiration

Sunsets are magical but also very overlooked in our busy lives. Showing a moment of something beautiful where others can enjoy it is what I strive for in my pictures. I like to take in nature more than most my age, but I also don't have kids tugging at me all the time.

Editing

Other than maybe a leveling of the water to look more natural, my watermark is all I have added to this picture. In My opinion - People over do the post-processing or make it look to unnatural and too perfect. I like to keep my photos near as they were when taken through the lens! Don't get me wrong - I've learn to edit photos but only to take small mistakes out or convert them to B&W, etc.

In my camera bag

I carry everything with me in my larger bag. My primary camera (T6i), spare battery, flash, all 3 lens (nifty-50, wide 18-55mm, 55-250mm). Extra gear like cleaning aids, chargers, more memory cards, bounce disc, pen & paper, and a small flash light! In the early spring, I keep a pare of gloves and hat with my camera as it can get colder in the evenings or morning. My tripod is always in my car during the April - Dec timeframes.

Feedback

read up on the Golden hour and learn to pick it out when you are out and about. Understand where you want to set up and get there 1hr earlier than the time of that golden hour. Patience and take a lot of shots in between the one you think you want vs you may miss. Worse case - you could capture that one shot of "wow". While clear skies are nice - the sunset has a better effect when there are clouds in the far horizon.
