Located in the north-western portion of Yosemite National Park we find Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This 3 mile long, 0.5 mile wide, 1200 acre, 1800' deep man made lake in the Sierra Nevada dams up a portion of the Grand Canyon of the Toulumne, the river which feeds the reservoir.
Once described as rivaling the beauty of Yosemite Valley, Hetch Hetchy Valley was created to feed the ever growing population in San Francisco (approximately 2.5 million Bay Area residents get their drinking water from the reservoir). It is also said that the damning of the Tuolumne River (at the 430' O'Shaughnessy Dam) and the completion of this project was what "killed" naturalist John Muir, who fought its construction vigorously, of a broken heart.
From the left: Wapama Rock, Middle Crag, Hetch Hetchy Dome, the reservoir as it winds up the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River, and finally Kolana Rock.
