On June 28, 1892, on the rails of Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, in downtown Lisbon, began to circulate an elevator with steam engines as a traction system. The route between Largo do Calhariz and Rua de São Paulo was able to be covered by the Elevador da Bica, a means of transportation designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, an engineer from Porto with French origins.

The ascending or descending trip of the hill in the elevator, which in 2002 was classified as National Monument, fulfills 283 meters and has the capacity to carry 23 passengers, of whom nine are seated and 14 are standing.
