Fieldfares, often in mixed flocks with Redwings and other thrushes, descend in large numbers on the UK from Scandinavia from October onwards, to enjoy berries in our hedgerows and gardens. They tend to be shy birds, avoiding human habitation until hunger drives them into gardens. There were very few berries left by March when the country experienced extremely cold weather and snow hampered foraging on the ground. This flock struck lucky and discovered an ornamental cherry in our street with plenty of fruit remaining. I stood all afternoon in falling snow taking photos of the birds feeding and squabbling.
