There is so much detail and so much to see in this photo - and yet the eye is still drawn to this adorable couple. Great capture!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in the Hudson Valley Region of New York State. We were having a small dinner party to celebrate the springtime birthday of a dear friend. I was caught up in the colorful decorations, animated conversation and delicious aroma of our little feast. I felt compelled to capture the moment.

Time

Late afternoon until dusk is my favorite time of the day. As the light softens and shadows lengthen I find that color and form becomes more pronounced. One of the many things I love about this photo is that I was able to capture colorful flowers outside the windows as a way to create a sense of overflow befitting the occasion.

Lighting

I am always intrigued by the transformative effect of glass when it is mixed with light and color. The dinner was situated in a conservatory that was filled with soft afternoon light. The lighting was beneficial in that there was minimal glare on the windows so an indoor dinner party could also have a garden party feel to it. A partial window glass reflection of the back of one person is essentially over-layered on the outside left of the garden area. This actually places the person both outside and inside the room at the same time. Another benefit of the soft natural light was that it allowed for the water glasses to magnify and transform the colorful napkins and decorations I liked that it added another dimension (albeit subtle) to the tabletop.

Equipment

i used an iPhone 7, aperture:f/1.8. Exposure 1/30. Focal length: 399/100. Iso:25.

Inspiration

More than inspired, I actually felt compelled to capture my own sense of excitement with vibrant colors, springtime air mixed with aromas of good food, and the ever pleasant sounds of joyful conversation and laughter.

Editing

I am a self taught photographer and also a painter. As a Mac person I do initial post processing with Photo software particularly with regard to cropping and adjusting light and color variables. With this particular photo I used Luminar to add some HD effects and enhance the overall vibrancy of the final product.

In my camera bag

When I go out for a photoshoot I pack an extendable camera stick to use with my Canon EOS Rebel T5. I also bring a telephoto lens, and always carry extra batteries. In the pocket of my jacket there's always my most recent version of the iPhone, just in case.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is that which my Grandfather gave me when I was about 8 years old. Andy was a professional photographer. When he gave me my first camera I asked him how I would know when to snap the picture. He told me to look through the viewfinder, and with a steady hand frame a picture that made me feel happy inside and click the button.
