The photo was taken in a small mountainside town known as Canmore, in Alberta, Canada. My wife and I enjoy going on day trips into the mountains to experience the sheer majesty of the surrounding landscape.Time
In the mountains, time becomes the sun dripping down the side of the rock, and in Alberta, the sun seems to hang forever in the blueness of the sky during summer. It was late afternoon as I took this picture, yet the light of the sun was still sitting in its peak.Lighting
I was lucky as the afternoon sun was harsh and glaring, yet the clouds that drifted in the blue of the sky softened the light immensely. When the softened light touched the edge of the mountains, I knew I had something special.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon T7i with a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens.Inspiration
The town of Canmore is actually surrounded by jutting mountain peaks that seem to glow in the light of day. For this particular picture I actually shot it several different ways, but nothing felt good. The image that you see here is actually the very last picture I took in my attempts. Even after I took it, I didn't really understand what I had until I reviewed the images the next day.Editing
I use Adobe Lightroom as my primary post-processing software. In this image I increased the sharpness and saturated the colours before applying a black and white filter. The saturation of the colours prior to switching it into black and white gave the image a nice contrast in shades.In my camera bag
Being of a personage that is far from wealthy, I try to use a very limited amount of equipment in a wide range of capacities. Sometime things work out, sometimes not so much. My standard bag (I only have the one) is filled with everything I own for photography. My body of choice (and of particular note, the one in which I could afford) is a Canon T7i. All of my photography comes from two lenses; the first is a standard kit 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 that came with my camera. I also carry around a Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 that I was able to purchase cheap from a pawn shop in town. Lastly, I keep a set of extension tubes for those crisp macroshots. Photography can get pretty expensive, but I'm not going to let that stop me from getting those excellent photos!Feedback
What do you want your audience to focus on? That's the question I continuously ask when I'm taking a photo. A lot of people think that taking landscape photos is simple: find the place to snap the shot and take it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. However even these kinds of photos turn out immensely better when you figure out what you want your audience to see. Choose a focal point, direct the shot around it.
