Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at an airshow at a Naval Air Station near Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Time

Taken early afternoon on a hot, humid day.

Lighting

This is natural light of course. I had to wait until they weren't flying into or out of the sun.

Equipment

The image was taken with a Nikon D7000, ISO. 100, f8, at1/320. Tamron 70-300 lens. The lens with the crop sensor gave me a little more telephoto reach.

Inspiration

I was just trying to get good shots of jets. Working on panning and keeping the jets in the frame.

Editing

Editing done in Lightroom. White Balance, black and white points, some shadow adjustment, and sharpening.

In my camera bag

On a normal day I carry my Nikon D810, a Nikon 24-70 f2.8, and a Tamron 70-200 f2.8.

Feedback

Air shows are usually all day in the summer. It can get very hot in the direct sun on a concrete field. Have access to plenty of water. The longer the lens the better. If you don't own or have access to long glass, you can rent it or do as I did. Use a crop sensor camera with the longest telephoto you have. I still needed to wait for the jets to be in the right spot to get fairly close images. Work on your panning before hand and use burst mode.
