Behind The Lens

Location

My family and I were on a boating trip in Punta Ballo, Negros Occidental, Philippines. We hopped from beach to beach and I was lucky to click this when we were heading back to our cottage. I was on the boat and just clicked some shots minding the boat is being rocked by the ocean waves.

Time

This shot was taken at sunset, on our way back to our cottage.

Lighting

I enjoyed watching this sunset so much and I almost forgotten I have a camera on me. The horizon was painted red, blacks from the shadows made by few clouds, red reflected on the ocean, and the spherical sun in the middle of it. It was just gorgeous to see. And I was sharing this view with my family so it was kinda rare for me.

Equipment

This was shot with D7200, 70-300 mm, 4-5.6 /f, AF, aperture priority, spot metering, no flash, continuous servo, ISO auto, and handheld. I have to consider the rocking boat so framing was tricky and I need the settings fast enough to expose the sunset that I am looking at.

Inspiration

I was just in the moment. As a hobbyist photographer, I rarely take pictures. I like to enjoy my surroundings first before I even consider taking photographs. But this sunset is too good to miss a click.

Editing

No, I didn’t have to post-process the image.

In my camera bag

I would always put a zoom and wide lens for me, 70-300 mm Nikkor AF 4-5.6 /f G, 18-55 mm AFS 3.5-5.6 /f, and 35 mm AFS 1.8 /f.

Feedback

Trust you skills, get to know your camera and its limits, point and shoot, resettings if you don’t like the shots, and reshoot. Always, get comfortable with your camera.
