This opening allows the Rio Grande to cut through a solid Plateau of rock known as the Mesa de Anguila, which is Table of the Eel, directly translated. Mesa de Anguila is that mountainous plateau where the crack splits the plateau. If it weren't for this crack in the Mesa, we'd probably not be visiting for this would be a truly sere and barren land without water.
