Behind The Lens

Location

I was invited to the Pacific Coast Dream Machines in Half Moon Bay, California Sunday April 29, 2018. I had some of my extend family there that are motorsports promoters (WGAS Motorsports). I was able to get some prime access to this event, getting me in front of the crowds and almost under the ramp for these pictures.

Time

This was the second show of the day, a total of three shows were planned. The first show of the day was at 11:00am which you know during this time of the year in Half Moon Bay, the fog can play a factor. This was that case on this day. The picture you see was from the second show of the day which started about 1:00pm in the afternoon, which is where the fog was starting to dissipate.

Lighting

This picture was unique as I had access to the area, which the general public would not normally have. I was able to get the sun behind me which was start to break from the fog at that time of the day.

Equipment

I have a older Nikon D40 which has provided me with great picture. I did open the aperture to allow some additional lighting in the camera due to the fog in the background. The lens I have used for most of this year is a telephoto lens Sigma 150-600mm 5-6.3 DG HSM OS Contemporary. I do not use a tripod while shooting action sports due to the usual high speed of the activity.

Inspiration

I have been trying to find motorsport activities to help me work through my new Sigma lens which I only received in February 2018. I wanted to get some aircraft and other motorsport which will help me work through this new lens. I generally have been taking motorsports and airshow pictures, which I am getting ready to make a couple of trips to a few events for 2018. This was a great opportunity to take some motocross pictures from riders that have been featured in the X-Games and actual have won different events over the years. There was a great time to get my timing right and notice what I can do better to improve my pictures for the other events I will be going to.

Editing

There was no post-production on this photo, I did not even have to crop this photo to get what I wanted on this picture. The red of the motocross rider and the gray of the fog in the background helped me get the extreme picture I was looking for on that day.

In my camera bag

I am developing my photograph bag right now, there is not to much other than several Nikon lens and now 2 sigma lens which have help me developed some of my picture. I am looking forward to purchasing a wide angel, fish-eye and another telephoto lens about 100~400mm. The other item I will be purchasing by the new year, will be an additional Nikon camera maybe in the highest DX camera or the mid size FX camera that Nikon has to offer at the time.

Feedback

I was able to have some prime access to this event, this was allowing me to get in front of the crowds which I did not have to worry about anything in front of me at this event. I was able to work through some shots in the first show of the day (at 11:00am), this helped me review all the pictures I took during that first show, and then re-angel myself for the second show of the day. I was able to get on a different angel from the first show, and was able to capture these shots especially the one you are looking at. I do attend different event but know who is preforming is helpful to know where you need to be to capture the photos you want to present to the world. I did not know these performers, but after a few minutes talking and asking about the kinds of trick they were show, I was able to quickly come up with a plan of where I needed to be. If you are heading to an event you do not have access to the performers, then know the layout of the course, usually watching practice is helpful.
