Green Heron

When I first saw this green heron (Butorides virescens), I didn't know it was a heron. I didn't know what it was, though. Good old Birds of Florida book! It's a heron, alright, though a small one. It doesn't have a long graceful neck reaching for the sky (or marshy water, which is more likely). It's low to the ground, about 10 inches when it's in the "I see my dinner" stance, as in this photograph. It's whole body, neck extended, is only about 17-20 inches.

The adult's head is a rich green, the neck and chest is a wonderful auburn color, and it's body-wings are a slaty gray. This bird concentrates on looking for dinner, and doesn't seem too dodgy, as many heron are likely to be. It was often in the presence of an anhinga on this day. I tried to get a picture of them both, but didn't succeed in focusing on both of them. Maybe tomorrow....
