Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at The Magic of Life Butterfly House in Wales UK. We took the kids who absolutely loved it, there were so many butterflies and we were able to feed them with sugar water.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon as it took us all morning to reach the butterfly house after taking a wrong turn.

Lighting

Lighting was beautifully filtering through the foliage of this big greenhouse structured butterfly house, I managed to take some beautiful shots thanks to the sunny day and filtered lighting.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D3300 with my standard kit lens 18-55mm, also using a macro attachment for some shots. Acclimating the equipment inside the butterfly house took some time as it was quite humid and my camera kept fogging up.

Inspiration

The patterns on this beautiful butterfly are so unique and eyecatching, I just had to get a close-up of its wings.

Editing

Tweak in sharpness and vibrancy

In my camera bag

I started off with one simple digital camera. Now I carry a Nikon D3300 with kit lens and 70-300mm lens. I also carry cleaning cloths, wide-angle lens attachment, macro lens attachment, remote control shutter release, several filters including UV and tone changer. I also take my tripod along with me in a separate carry case.

Feedback

Butterfly houses tend to be quite humid so allow time for your camera equipment to acclimate or your shots will be quite hazy. Also, I found my macro attachment really handy to get more magnified shots of the butterflies, or using a macro lens will get you really close, detailed shots.
