Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my front yard, located in Seattle area. I am self-taught, and have been experimenting with natural lighting outdoors. Every day is a new lesson for me.

Time

This photo is definitely one of my favorites. I remember glancing outside just after lunch and noticing the cherry trees in full bloom. I grabbed my camera and made my way outside. My giant black vizsla and lab mix following me out; stood guard as I proceeded to climb up one of the trees. Cool breeze sweeping in from the west, did prove to be a slight issue to get a still shot. This was taken on April 23rd, 2018, at 2:23pm.

Lighting

I wanted to get a pure and natural look with this photo. Capturing the feeling of cherry blossoms in my area. I had to find the right angle where the light was coming through the petals, without it becoming over powering.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS digital Rebel XS, with an EF-S 18-55mm lens f/3.5. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I am always looking for small finds everywhere I go. I had been thinking of going out in the garden to take a few photos when I noticed the cherry tree. I just had an urge to go there instead. Once I was standing under the branches, I wanted others to see the beauty I could see looking up through the pink blossoms to the clear blue sky. I realized though when I climbed up, that the sky and bright sunlight would wash the flowers out; so opted to stay in the shade primarily, and used the other branches as the backdrop.

Editing

I did not. It is actually rare for me to do so with nature photos.

In my camera bag

First thing I pack is the two lenses. Canon 18-55mm macro, and EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 Zoom. I always carry both since I never know what I will find next, besides my initial goal. Next is the camera body, my Canon rebel EOS XS. Majority of the time I will always have a few lens filters as well. My favorite is my polarizing filter honestly.

Feedback

Where I live, the seasons all have their own distinct beauty, and the weather can change all year round in less than hour from clear sky to pouring rain. There is always something in bloom, you just have to be willing to go outside at any time and look for the small things that normally get over looked by most. Take a chance and go look for something rather than just waiting for something to come to you. And climbing trees, it works. As long as you don’t drop anything.
