Took this image of my wife’s hands holding and sifting the black sand of the beach in Vik, Iceland.Time
This was early on a overcast spring morning, when the sea, sky and earth shone darkly. B/W seemed to be the proper call.Lighting
No special measures. I wanted to reflect the simple starkness of time and place, the surprising stillness and quiet, and the palest warmth of the human touch.Equipment
Shot with a Canon EOS T1i with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Aperture 5.6, Exposure 1/125, ISO 100.Inspiration
The black sand and every “like sand thru the hourglass” image we’ve ever seen. The fact that my wife and I aren’t getting any younger played an obvious role as well.Editing
I wanted to maximize the foreground focus and heighten the level of detail, while softening the background. I also managed to hide her wedding ring.In my camera bag
The T1i, Canon base, wide angle and zoom lenses, assorted filters, tripod and my trusty iPhone 7s.Feedback
In places like Iceland, where geography and weather present as many opportunities as roadblocks, I look to maximize what the subject offers and my equipment allows.
