Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the former island called Schokland, in the Netherlands.

Time

The sun was setting on a summer day, so it was quite late.

Lighting

I wanted to have the sunset in the same shot as the couple. When we found these stairs, it was a perfect opportunity to achieve this. With the sun behind the couple, the silhouette forms are created.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 550D with my Tamron 18-200mm lens.

Inspiration

We were going out to take some photos in the sunset because this couple just had their 25th anniversary. By walking around the area you gather some ideas, take some photos here and there. This one really stood out, because it was unique. When we stumbled upon the stairs, we formed this idea of one of the two standing on top and the other down below. Because I really wanted to have the sunset in the shot too, I placed myself on this side of the stairs to create this image.

Editing

I did do post-processing. I enhanced the contrast a bit to make the colours pop, and I also enhanced the shadows and the blacks to create the deep black to make it look more like silhouettes without seeing any features of their clothing or their faces.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon EOS 550D with me, and the Tamron 18-200mm lens is attached to it. Some extra batteries and an extra SD card is useful too, but I usually don't have to use those. Nowadays I start to go out more with my new 24mm lens alongside the Tamron lens.

Feedback

If you want to create a photo with silhouettes using the sunset only, make sure that you know the location where you want to shoot, so you can experiment with the surroundings during the shoot, like I did with these stairs. You should also know when the sun is setting and where.
