Rocky Seals & Shores Cottages, along the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada.Time
This was shot in the middle of the afternoon with very harsh sunlight. There was shade from a tree behind the cottage, so I asked the subject to move to the shade.Lighting
It was important to search for soft light as it was mid July without a cloud in the sky. I wouldn't have gotten the same results in full sun.Equipment
Nikon D750, Sigma Art 50mm 1.4Inspiration
Close friends of ours moved across the country years ago. We both had our own little families now, and I was meeting their children for the first time as they were in the province visiting family. We planned a weekend camping trip to be closer to where they were staying at a rented cottage. I was determined to create some meaningful photos, but went in without any sort of plan as I wanted to get to know the children first. The subject of the photo, Ella, is a fiery redhead surrounded by brothers. But trust me, she can hold her own. I wanted to portray her strength without the distraction colour can bring, so I had her hold her fist in front of her face and quickly took a couple photos ... cause you know ... naturally she can only stay in one place for 15 seconds at a time.Editing
I started with the RAW file in Lightroom. Did a few minor adjustments in Photoshop before finishing in Alien Skin. Created some motion blur in Alien Skin for the finishing touch. In my camera bag
Nikon D750 with an assortment of Sigma Art prime lenses.Feedback
If trying to create a similar image with the fist in front of their face, save yourself some frustration and don't bother telling them to move their fist. Adjust it yourself and tweek the positioning by adjusting your camera position. Remember, these critters are fast and have the attention span of a gnat!
