This image was taken in a spare bedroom that is converted into a sort of a den/make-shift studio in our home.Time
I most often get to shoot in the afternoon on those rare days when we are not babysitting our grand-daughter and her eleven-year-old cousin at the end of his school day. The opportunities are really few and far between but it is great fun whenever the opportunities present themselves.Lighting
The vast majority of my shooting is done indoors for a variety of reasons, the most pressing being mobility issues having to do with my age and weight. That's the beauty of photography, it allows you to participate regardless of whatever limitations you may have. Because of that I most often use flash when taking my images. I don't have softboxes or anything like that and bounce the flash off of anything and everything, whether the flash is on or off camera.Equipment
I use Canon cameras. My go to is a 70d and I have a backup T2i that was my main one when I got back into photography after many many years of photographic inactivity. Even though I own a tripod I have only used it once. I do not enjoy tripod photography and avoid using it at all costs. Since I can't get out often this is not all that hard to accomplish. I use a fully manual flash most of the time and a Yongnuo flash with TTL capability when I use on-camera bounce flash. As far as lenses go I mostly use my Tamron 90mm macro lens or my 18-250 Sigma. When I do get out the Sigma is my walk around lens and my still life lens because my "studio" is so small. I am beginning to experiment with Lensbaby lenses but haven't gotten the hang of them yet.Inspiration
Mainly, I just love flowers. My wife went to the store and bought these lilies and I was able to find the time to take some shots of them one afternoon. I like to get in close with most of my images to present a view that many people may never have seen before. It's like an invisible world in plain sight.Editing
I do very little post-processing. For the most part, I keep shooting and adjusting until I get what I want in-camera. A little brightness and/or contrast adjustment is pretty much all I do.In my camera bag
Like I said earlier, I don't get to go out and shoot very often but I do have in addition to what I mentioned earlier I do have a Canon 85mm f1,8 lens, a 2x teleconverter, some filters and assorted gadgets that I really don't get to use very often if at all. But they are there if I need them. I guess you could say that I like to keep things simple.Feedback
This particular image was taken with off-camera bounce flash. It was bounced into a white cardboard panel. My shutter speed was set to the maximum flash sync speed and the subject was placed in front of a black cardboard background taped to the wall with velcro and gaffers tape. Then it was just experimenting with f-stops to get the look I liked. It's not rocket science, but it works for me and what I like.
