Location
This was taken at the first Track and Field meet in 2018 at Heritage Hall High School in Tulsa OK.Time
This was shot with mid-morning early spring direct sunlight (i.e. 10:26 AM on March 3, 2018) without a cloud in the sky.Lighting
When shooting athletes during competition getting white balance right is super important and should never be set to auto. The sun should be at your back if at all possible to help ensure the subject gets lit without having to correct shadows since it is considered "bad form" to use use fill flash.Equipment
Nikon D7200, NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8, VR, and MB-D15 Battery Grip.Inspiration
The Head Coach of the track team was a referee at a charity basketball game that I shot in December and he was so impressed with those photos that he asked me to photograph his team's track meet. It was my first track meet and I jumped at the opportunity to expand my sports photography portfolio.Editing
I straightened the horizon and cropped the photo to better center the subject as well as increased the clarity. In my camera bag
I only use Nikon equipment from my batteries to my lenses because of better reliability and less time spent troubleshooting issues. I always have my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens, spare EN-EL15 batteries, gray card for setting white balance, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 80mm f/1.8 lenses.Feedback
Here is a list of 5 tips to capture athletes in competition like this shot: 1) Learn your equipment inside and out. 2) Learn the sport that you are shooting so you know where you can be and what you can do as the photographer (flash, move, etc). 3) Have a super fast professional telephoto lens. 4) Learn to back button focus while tracking athletes. 5) Setup the camera to shoot 100% manual mode including white balance by learning how to use your gray card to set the white balance. This is needed due to the time required to post process the high number of pictures you shoot at sporting events.
