I think that you did an excellent job with the creativeness in this photo. I love the pose, the tone and the artwork. Let your sister know that she is truly beautiful and you are through your work, beautiful as well. Great work!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my parents home, on the balcony. Photography has always been a hobby of mine for years. I am a self learnt photographer so every shoot or photographic opportunity is a new lesson.

Time

This is one of my favourite pictures, and it was during the warmer season in Kenya. My sister has always modeled for me, and it was one of those moments where she wanted me to take photos of her. The natural lighting was simply perfect and allowed me to create a powerful image through her side profile, because it amplified her facial features. This photo was taken on 23rd June 2018, at 2.52pm.

Lighting

I wanted her facial features to be defined the most. Specifically her eyes, hair, lips, nose, and neck. The lighting was able to highlight her neck exceptionally, but keep her nose, eyes, and hair darker. The natura light also effectively amplified this powerful aura in her facial expression and gaze.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3200. 50-200mm lens, f/4. No other equipment involved.

Inspiration

I have always asked my sister to model for me, and honestly I didn’t have any inspiration when I took the photo until I had edited it. I have always been inspired by a womans power, and how greatly under estimated it is. I took this photo at the right time, and place to portray the power of a woman, and more specifically a mixed African woman.

Editing

I wanted there to be a balance between shadows and light. So i slightly reduced the exposure and slightly increased the shadows until I was content with the balance.

In my camera bag

I carry two cameras with me: a Nikon D3200, and a Panasonic Lumix. Lumix has a fixed lens of 50-400mm. I carry two lenses for my Nikon: 50-200mm and 18-55mm. Plus extra batteries, memory cards, and chargers.

Feedback

Be spontaneous. Sometimes the perfect opportunity presents itself around you without you having to look far for it. It could be with your family, friends, neighbor, or even your pets. However don’t disregard developing your eye. Your eye is the most important tool besides your camera.
