Behind The Lens

Location

At Rio Magdaleno underneath the ICE plant. Guanacaste, CR

Time

It was the late afternoon sun, providing the best light

Lighting

I looked at which angle there was the best reflection and no background distrction. The pattern is the light on the river

Equipment

A D800E. Still the sharpest. My old 400 mm f/2.8 MF Nikkor. Didn't have anything else then.

Inspiration

I was originally intending to take closer macro shots but liked the way they hovered, even the worn ones, above the river.

Editing

I converted it to Black and White in Exposure. It never looks extreme.

In my camera bag

A tele (200-500 very often) a macro and some Landscape lens (24-35 Sigma) if I am out in nature. That would change completely in a city. The D500 or D800E, using the latter for the landscape lens. No other gimmicks needed. A car key :)

Feedback

Be very very patient and observe. Dragonflies like the sun. They don't like movement, so make sure to move in slow motion. Watch your shadow, it would see them off :-) Don't even dream to get as close as 20 cm with an unsuitable macro (less than 150mm). They're fast.
