This shot was the last taken in my first portfolio collection, being one of the few photos I have taken when snow and ice were at less of a premium to find. Taken a short hike through waist deep snow away from the scenic lookout on Old Highway 40 in Truckee CA, this photo of Donner Lake is taken with the foreground of an interesting snow pattern that appears to have been formed after the snow fell, slid, and then froze into a shape that almost looks like a wave. The composition of this shot was a difficult task given that standing to take a photo on this snow formation was more than a little precarious. The reward, however, was immense: this shot was able to capture both the wave and the horizon in a way that exemplifies the rule of thirds, and still keeps the lake as the main subject of the photo, something that made this shot stand out vastly from its counterparts in the shoot. This combined with the blue and white color palate that seems to envelope the entire photo makes this one of my favorite photos in this collection.
