Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in Southwest Florida near a known and regulated Bald Eagle nest.
Time
This image was taking in the morning as the sun rose behind me.
Lighting
The light in Florida can become harsh very quickly. This site was about 2 hours from where I live, so leaving about 4am from Miami to travel to the west coast of Florida paid dividends as the low sun lit the Eagle well without overexposing the highlights.
Equipment
Nikon D500 with a 200-500 f:5.6 telephoto. Handheld
Inspiration
Being from Southern California, it is not often an opportunity to see and Eagle arose. But when I moved to Florida I heard that they hold one of the largest year round Eagle populations in the US. I knew I had to see these majestic birds in nature for the first time. As I found the nest site tucked away ironically in a little suburb near the Florida Everglades it was love at first site. The Eagles had two chicks they were feeding so one would constantly be leaving to catch fish. On one of the exits the eagle flew right towards my direction and got so close that not all of it was in frame. The result was an amazing profile image of the eagle in flight!
Editing
Simple post processing, including a slight crop to center the subject
In my camera bag
I am a Nikon user. On landscape I carry my D850 with my Nikkor 14-24 f:2.8, 24-120 f:4 and 70-200 f:2.8.
Feedback
Wildlife is tiring, unpredictable, frustrating and inspiring all at once. So many time you will come home empty handed but perseverance pays off, because the sweet reward of seeing spectacular wildlife is well worth it. Additionally it is extremely helpful to research wildlife habits as every species has unique characteristics that will help locating them. For example Eagle's are voracious fishers and never nest away from water. So in searching for Eagles you always want to be near a body of water.
