Behind The Lens

Location

This great moment was taken in Chicago Illinois. It was done in a rented studio space.

Time

The time of the day... It was around 6pm in the evening.

Lighting

About the light... I used a Studio PRO 68in Octagon soft box. With a studio PRO 400 Watt mono light flash strobe. There was light but the background was set in dark. There was also light from above to shine her face. Maybe the speed will also help. It was set at 400ISO with an f/11 and sometimes f/9 Manual mode. Focus set at Matrix!!! With an Opteka ND4 filter to compensate for skin color.

Equipment

The camera : it was my Nikon 3000. The lenses: was a Tamron 70-300mm 5.6 with an Opteka ND4 to enhance the color of her skin.

Inspiration

I will be as honest as I can. That day and evening photo session was coming to a close. It was just a few more takes of this awesome model and I was calling it a day. What inspired me to take this moment where her dimples. I was taking some moments... There it was! Abby finally gave me a true smile. So true was this smile that it became my favorite out all the takes. It was a true inspirational moment when she gave a smile, dimples, eyes, and face was just perfect. The moment inspired me.

Editing

I did do but very little post-processing. There was : Exposure, darken blacks, Temps slightly increased, Saturation less. The rest of the pic was just detail of her feature smile.

In my camera bag

My equipment since this moment. It has been up dated. At the moment of this photo session was my regular equipment with only a few lenses. A Nikkor 18-55mm 3.6-5.6g Tamron 70-300mm 4- 5.6 Tele macro AF Nikkor 35-80mm 4-5.6D Opteka glass filters Flash Tri0P0 Speedlight TR-988 I carry two of this type of flashes. Never know, never know... Extra batteries for camera, flashes and Neewer FCR-16 triggers.

Feedback

About the advice on this moment. Some of us photographers forget to take our break. Always remember to take your 10 minute break. Turn of all the equipment so it will be ready for the next session. Take your moments with planing. Just remember to save your settings. Some settings due change due to model and specific light to their skin. To capture something similar... BE spontaneous! Make your model feel comfortable and relaxed. Since most of her true beauty will come from all the muscles being relaxed at the moment of the take. Never hesitate to make your model laugh, this is what caused this marvelous moment to be UNIQUE it all its entirety. My model was a bit tired and ready to call it a night also was I. But ... The moment is everlasting with a smile, a true smile. I the photographer am guilty of making my model smile with a joke that I told... Oh Yes! ALWAYS make sure to focus on the models eyes! This is important. The eyes and full face features need to be focused and not blurry. Remember to have such settings in mind always...
