Behind The Lens

Location
I captured this image in a home studio in North Carolina.
Time
Late afternoon, just after feeding time for this beautiful little one.
Lighting
Overcast sky sharing it's beautiful even light entering a southern window. Natural light only, diffused with an Impact diffuser held by my sweetheart of forty three years.
Equipment
Hand held Canon 1Dx Mark II and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens with an Impact diffuser.
Inspiration
Blessed with ten grandchildren, I have a passion for candid portraitures. This little one weighed in at 3 pounds 12 ounces when born. She spent several weeks in the NICU before discharge from the hospital. Her size allowed us opportunities we typically would not have. This is my favorite image! But.....please remember, I say that about the other nine grandkids as well! To me, this is a message of parental love, family and gratitude for the men and women of our armed forces.
Editing
Imported into Lightroom, generic global edits made. Then on to Photoshop for localized editing and cropping. I was fortunate to get it right in camera so post-production was made easy.
In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: a Canon 1Dx Mark II and a Canon 5D Mark III. I carry a Canon 400mm f/2.8, a Canon 16-35mm f/4, a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 with a Canon 1.4x EF Extender III. My GITZU carbon fiber tripod and my Canon Remote Shutter Release, my RRS BH-55 Ball Head and my Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Head are always attached to my Maxpedition Back Pack. When traveling, I use my Pelican 1560 Hard Case and my Pelican Air 1535. And finally, when on foot, I always have my Peak Design adjustable camera strap.
Feedback
In one word, patience. I've always told my family that I am an Outdoor Photographer. I would much rather photograph a landscape or wildlife as they do not talk back and give direction. I use my wife and my adult daughters to set the scene and prepare the grandkids. Beyond that, without an expectation, we begin. I love candids simply because there is an emotion attached to the image.
