Location
Image was taken at my camera clubs studio group shoot in March 2018. This is a group of about 14 individuals who share a passion for portraiture. We run the group shoots once a month during the club's season and usually have one or two models to pose for us. We set the models up in their own backdrop and take it in turns to shoot with them. Sometime we have a model who really stands out from the crowd and Caz in one such model. It was really tricky to not get a good shot of her.Time
The studio group meets once a month between 7 and 10pm on the third Monday of the month.Lighting
Despite having many option regarding lighting, my preference is for a single light - I believe this creates the most moody images and I love a moody portrait. This was a single large octobox off to the side at 45 degrees against a plain grey back drop. No reflectors were used and in hindsight I believe this was a mistake as it would have filled in some of the shadow on the right side of her face.Equipment
My trusty old Nikon shot in manual mode - f4 at 1/200th. For this shot I used a Nikon 85mm f1.4G lens - one of my favourite portrait lenses.Inspiration
What inspired me? The model did - such a lovely face deserved to be captured nicely.Editing
Post processing was carried out in Photoshop. To be honest, not much was needed. The models skin was pretty blemish free and the subtle lighting worked well to hide any imperfections that might have existed. I added a little colour toning and some artificial separation behind the model to make up for my lack of a rim light or reflector. In my camera bag
For portraits my 'go to' gear is the D810 with either a 35mm, 85mm, 105mm, 135mm or, for longer shots, the 70-200mm f2.8 VRII. My favourite of these is the 135mm - its a lovely Zeiss lens and therefore all manual (no auto-focus). I like it because its razor sharp and it slows me down, making me think more about the shot I'm about to take. Its a stellar performing lens - especially on the D810.Feedback
Keep it simple and time your shots to coincide with the models best expressions. Find a lens you love and use it loads, really 'learn it'... make it the one lens that best suits the style of image you want to take. And don't forget to focus on the closest eye. If the eyes are not sharp the image is no use.
