Location
This photo was taken in what has become one of my absolute favorite places, llulsait, Greenland in the Icefjords. It is an other worldly place, completely still, quiet and glassy where you sail amongst these enormous icebergs (and whales ) that are every shade of blue and silver - it's beyond amazing and truly something to behold. I really had no idea what to expect when I impulsively decided to buy tickets and fly there, what the heck, right? But from the moment I set foot on this magical land I was a hooked.Time
This photo was taken in the end of July around 1am since the sun never completely sets there. The sunsets last for literally hours - the entire sky bursts into shades of pinks, oranges and purples and you completely loose track of time partially because it's always somewhat light out and more so because it's too gorgeous to go to sleep! We chartered a boat for a couple of days and went out every night around 10pm for hours to sail amongst the icebergs - sitting on the deck drinking hot chocolate, watching whales and taking pics will always be one of my most cherished memories.Lighting
Because the water is completely still, I wanted to capture the color striations from the sky but make this feel moody and desolateEquipment
I shot this with pretty basic equipment - a Canon Mark 5 and a 24-70 cannon zoom lens which was the first lens I ever bought.Inspiration
It's really hard to not find inspiration in Greenland, literally everything you look at is "photo-worthy - it's so damn beautiful. But having never been so close to icebergs I was endlessly fascinated by their multitude of ever changing colors and shapes and the juxtaposition of their massiveness and strength to the stillness of the waterEditing
Usually I do a fair amount of processing, but in this case because the colors there are this vibrant I barely did any.In my camera bag
I always have my standard 70-200mm cannon zoom lens & a 24mm Sigma art lens as well as protective rain/bad weather stuff since we travel to a lot of cold, wet places. I've also been renting a variety of other lenses based on what I read about and other landscape photographer's recommendations which has been a really fun way to broaden my abilities since I am a fairly new photographer. I also ALWAYS have a hat, gloves and a snack since I am always cold and snacks help!Feedback
Be patient and think about what you are trying to capture and why - my emotions to something dictate how I choose to photograph it. It's visceral yet also somewhat random. You never know what the end result might be and it's often times that a pic that i think at the time seems like nothing, turns out my best shot of the day. Look for the beauty in little details and regardless of how trite this might sound - have fun.
