The lioness had participated in a kill the night before and has settled down for a rest in the shade.
I was in Botswana when we encountered a pride of 10 lions. How exciting! In a topless vehicles, with a huge male, 4 lionesses, and 5 cubs of various ages roaming around. Needless to say, I used a telephoto lens (100-400mm), but still.....Luckily the excitement overcame any possible fear...as long as everybody stayed very very still. I just clicked away. I had about 500 images from that little experience, but the time it took to weed through them was well worth it.
The lion (Panthera leo) is in the genus Panthera and the family Felidae. Some males exceed 550 pounds, making it the second-largest cat after the tiger. (Info from Wikipedia)
