We are fortunate enough to have a whole family of Robins in the Garden, Mum & Dad having made the most of the nesting box we installed behind the fur tree in a nice quiet hidden spot. Making the most of the opportunity, every photographer needs that classic 'Robin on a Spade Handle' in their portfolio. After some time, getting used to hoping onto it on their way to the bird feeders, I was finally blessed with just the shot :-)

Great photo, Tim! You must be relishing this 100-400mm Mark II lens, eh? The sharpness is great and the bokeh really subtle.

Cheers Mick! Yes, absolutely loving it, it's become my most used lens. The reach and sharpness has already had me hankering after a little more reach still though (blush). In the meantime, this shot has helped me fully see the impact of noise and 25% reduction in Lightroom made a very positive difference, although it could perhaps still do with even a little more.

A vigilant use of noise reduction in Lightroom will help, by use it sparingly, because by removing luminance noise you also remove a lot of detail. And avoid using the camera's "High ISO" and "Long Exposure" noise reduction or any other form of noise reduction. In the rare cases I use noise reduction, it is in post processing of RAW files. The 100-400mm Mark II lens hits a sweet spot at 200mm. At that setting the sharpness at F/5 (max) and F/5.6 is out of this world in the centre and very good at the extremes. For 400mm, the higher the aperture the better, so F/5.6 is spot on.

Thanks Mick, I always keep to the widest aperture wherever possible and wouldn't dream of not using RAW/Lightroom now :-) I also think I've finally found my niche; country/outdoors/dog photography, so plenty of those type images from here and a 1DX II and some equally nice glass on the horizon :-)
