Behind The Lens

Location

Hello, my name is Rick and I've been a Professional Full time photographer since 1994. I was at the customers home and both Mom and Dad requested an intimate shot of their first newborn. We collaborated together to come up with something that was both intimate and special.

Time

This shot was taken early in the morning. Of course with babies, we've had to time things for the proper feeding schedule.

Lighting

Well when is comes to shooting children and especially babies, quick lighting set up is the key to getting good expressions. This shot was done with only one light, shooting through an umbrella. Well, like I was taught many years ago, there is only one Sun. It's how you shape that scenario to fit your purposes, at that moment in time.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Nikon D300s. One real great underrated camera, even at just 12MP. I've done so many images with this camera, it still boggles my mind at how great this camera is, especially under good lighting condtions

Inspiration

Actually it was the parents that really inspired me. They were very flexible and open about creating a keepsake for their family. I've shown this image to professional as well as creative people with mixed reviews. It's not for everyone, especially those that may find it distasteful, due to their own personal hangups. But of course, art can be judged in the same manor.

Editing

Yes, I did a little Post processing, with Lightroom and Photoshop, but kept it to a minimum

In my camera bag

At this moment in time, I'm using a Nikon D850. What a wonderful camera and so many choices for lenses dating back to 1959. My go to lens is a 24-70 2.8 lens. I also carry a few prime lenses, including a Voigtlander 58 mm 1.4 manual focus lens which is just a dream. I'm now experimenting with Godox flash units and find them very easy to use. Plus I use Godox receivers for my Nikon SB900's as well.

Feedback

Best thing I can say about capturing images like this is, trust! If you've been shooting for clients for a long time, and if you've got a good reputation, people will recommend you. Don't experiment with clients, do this out in the field on your own time and tweak your results till you get something unique once the opportunity presents itself. Get off the internet and keep shooting whenever you can. There will be times when something magically will happen when your at the right place at the right time.
