Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my back yard. We own 1.5 acres, and have some small trees behind our house.

Time

This happened at sunset, at the end of golden hour.

Lighting

I was trying something different here. I was shooting through the flowers into the setting sun, so the light made some of the petals almost translucent. I really liked how it changed the colors of the overall scene. I also loved the bokeh it produced.

Equipment

I used my canon EOS Rebel T5, 75-300mm zoom, f/4.5, ISO 100, 1/200 shutter speed. No tripod or flash. UV filter on lens.

Inspiration

I have really enjoyed some of the macro photos I see on ViewBug. After studying many of the photos, I tried many different shots at different angles. This is the only one I tried pointing directly at the horizon and into the setting sun.

Editing

I did minimal post processing in Lightroom. I focused primarily on touching up the highlights and luminosity, as well as small adjustments to the white balance.

In my camera bag

Canon Rebel T5, Canon EOS 60D, 50mm f/1.8, 75-300mm f/4-5.6, 18-55mm 3.5-5.9 IS, Tripod, various lens filters, directional flash

Feedback

Arizona is known for incredible sunsets. Most people want to shoot those (as they should!). But don't limit yourself to that. Use that unique and amazing lighting to shoot something smaller. Look and observe how that amazing sunset is transforming the things right around you.
