Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Stillwater, MN Ice Castle. This brave momma volunteered to model for us. It was February 3 and it was cold!

Time

It was just before 4pm when this shot was taken.

Lighting

The beautiful warm glow coming from behind was the sunlight peeking through the exit. We seen the light and knew we had to position one of the models in front to get this gorgeous shot!

Equipment

I shot this photo with my Nikon D7200, 35mm 1.8g dx lens, no flash or tripod used.

Inspiration

I'm part of an online group and they like to put together styled/organized shoots. I try to make the meet ups whenever I can because it is not only so much fun, but each time the focus is something new, so I know I am going to learn!

Editing

I import my photos into Lightroom and do a few adjustments there before going into photoshop to make the magic happen! This particular shot didn't need much besides the exit sign removed that was to her left.

In my camera bag

My bad has: Nikon D750, Nikon D7200, Tamron 70-200 2.8, Nikon 50 1.8, Tamron 28-75 2.8, and the Yongnuo 35mm 2. I also have two speedlights, battery pack, tons of rechargeable batteries, extra batteries for my camera, SD cards galore, reflector, and two House of Flynn camera bags!

Feedback

Use all the light you can! Manipulate it, try a new angle, turn your model, move yourself, really anything that can change the look of a shot and just keep practicing! I love playing with my depth of field as well, but light is the biggest thing. Use it anyway you can!
