Road trip to the Smoke Creek area. This guy was very cooperative, must have been good hunting in this area.

Location
It is very unusual to be able to photograph a Golden Eagle at such close range, but the Smoke Creek ranch in northern Nevada is so remote he may have never seen a human.Time
Exploring the high desert in mid-day is normally dedicated to scouting locations and for getting into the back country to catch the evening light, but you take the shots presented to you.Lighting
Shooting mid-day in bright sun is always a challenge, but there are always subjects and compositions that will work in this light. My rule is wait 5 minutes and the light will change. On this day thunderstorms moved in and we got some amazing shots as the lighting changed throughout the afternoon.Equipment
This image is several years old but the quality of the Nikon cameras and lenses holds up today.Inspiration
Shots like this don’t present themselves everyday, the sign and the hunting Golden Eagle tells a story about the resilience of the native species to the encroachment of man.Editing
Processed in Photoshop to suppress the highlights of the bright white clouds. In my camera bag
I have always shot Nikon gear with some Zeiss lenses thrown in. I am shooting with a D850 today and mostly primes.Feedback
For me it is always about the exploration and being curious. Take the time to experiment with composition, lighting and the capabilities of your gear so you are ready to create images under any situation.
