Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Petrogradskaya storona (Petrograd Side), a historical district in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Time

It was 3 p. m., but the northern sun was not very high in March. It was time for a special spring light in the often gloomy city.

Lighting

I tried to convey a sense of spring of light, when old houses become a stage for the play of lights and shadows.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 350D with an EF-S 17-85 mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

My favorite subject is urban details and architectural fragments. Such lighting gives these objects a new life.

Editing

Sure I did. I corrected the geometry in Photoshop, used some filters, curves, and made a slightly-colored black and white shot.

In my camera bag

I am not a professional photographer; I’m an artist who uses photography. When I walk around I always have the old Canon 350D with me (but it is finally time to change it). When I travel, I can bring two cameras, three lenses, and tripod.

Feedback

I have shot this kind of pictures in many cities. But I’m afraid I can’t tell something very new. 1. Read as much as possible about the place you are going to shoot. 2. Be attentive to local laws. Once I was detained by the Swedish police for an accidental shot of a police station. 3. Don’t be lazy.
