Long Point is a part of Newfoundland & Labrador rarely seen by many and seldom heard of by tourists holds quite the secret... a 600 - 483.4 MILLION year old secret, to be exact! Resettled in the mid 1900's, Long Point had been home to a small French population encompassing a cluster of families such as the Le Prieur, Young, Formanger, Gaudet, Woods, Le Roy, and Duffeny (Long Point, NL - Census 1945). These families came from France, Sagona Island and St. Georges.
No buildings stand at Long Point today with the exception of a seasonal fishing operation and a several cabins. Fossils riddle the coastline pre-dating the Ordovician age (not to confuse, but much of the fossils and rock are from the Ordovician age) rock along the coastline comprised of grey limestone, blue shale, calcareous limestone and sandstone. Some of the fossils include brachiopods, bryozoa, crinoids, gastropods, graptolites, ostracodes, scolecodonts, stromatoporoids, tabulate corals and trilobites.
