Behind The Lens

Location

The front strand (beach) at Youghal, Co, Cork, Ireland

Time

It was shot at 6:30 on a February evening

Lighting

The light is natural, though I did use ND filters to lengthen the the exposure and lifted the red colour a bit using Lightroom

Equipment

Shot using a Nikon D750, Sigma 24-105 F4 Art, a manfrotto tripos and Lee 10stop ND Filters

Inspiration

I love Youghal, I love shooting over water and I love long exposure photography so really in this shot everything came together.

Editing

I post processed in Lightroom Classic which is normally just to remove dust spots, tweak the clarity and contrast. In this case I emphasised the reds in the sky a bit.

In my camera bag

I normally use Manfrotto or Lowepro bag, it depends on what gear I am using. Now while I still have the D750 I shoot mostly with a Nikon Z6 and carry only two lenses, the Nikkor 24-70 F4S and the Nikkor 14-30 F4S. As I am mostly a long exposure photographer I don't need the fast F2.8 lenses. The biggest part of my gear now is filters. On a given shot I have 3 x screw on filters (6 stop, 10 stop, 6 stop reverse grad), 3 x Nd System filters (6 stop, 10 stop, 13 stop) and three hard graduated filters (1 stop, 2 stop & 6 stop). Along with a remote release. Outside the bag there is always wellington boots.

Feedback

Plan your shoot, know the location, know the tides and know the sunset/sunrise times. If you can, keep returning to the same location until you get the shot you want. I have hundreds of these Youghal groyne shots and each time I go down to visit I shoot more because every time its different.
