Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a trip to Brazil. I was in Florianopolis visiting my fiancé's aunt. I spent a few days in the city and was on the hunt for some amazing scenery that would differ from my usual backdrop of the Northeastern United States. I asked where would be the best view of the city and her aunt told me about this place on top of a large switch back hill. She said, "Do you know how to drive a standard because I do not like driving my car up there? I said yes and was up for the switch back adventure. Low and behold my switchback driving led me to this breathtaking view of the city.

Time

I was up there an hour before sunset which was my plan to see the colors of they sky open up during sunset. I knew that with the clouds in the sky I would be able to capture some great colors and light.

Lighting

I like to shoot a lot of my work in the morning or late afternoon close to sunset for the best light. Depending on cloud cover and season you can get some great colors through the sky in both the morning and late afternoon.

Equipment

I usually travel very light especially when going to another country. I had my Sony A7sII and a Canon 17-40mm f/4 L lens on there. I was standing near a building that had a cement roof. I found a good spot to hoist myself up on the flat roof where no one else really dared to go. Dialing in my settings I then proceeded to put the camera down on the flat roof and captured a good 25 minute timelapse of this scene. This is one of many stills from this moment.

Inspiration

I wanted to show the beauty of this city from a locally familiar location but stand somewhere no one else really wanted to try. You need to push angles and boundaries to be different and make something your own.

Editing

I used Lightroom for this and shot it with a flat profile. I brought some color back into it and dodged some areas just like you would in the dark room.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I'm shooting and how mobile I have to be. As a filmmaker and photographer I either have my RED Epic Dragon, Sony A7SII, 5D Mark III, Mamiya C300, or a 35mm film camera. I also carry a 24-70, 70-200, 17-40, and or 50mm.

Feedback

You should be patient and be willing to stay somewhere for a while in order to capture the right moment. Find the places people talk about locally but photograph them in an entirely different way because after all this is your vision. Why go through all the trouble of being in a place to come out with the exact same result as everyone else? Photography is a way of expression and not a chess match. We all learn from each other and creation is a collaborative effort.
