Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the bottom of Peña de Bernal on the outskirt of Mexico City.

Time

After a week long trip across the mountains of Mexico, we saw this huge rock protruding from the ground and thought, this would be a great place to fly our drone for footage. It was a bit chilly as it was still a little early-ish in the morning.

Lighting

The sun was covered by a tiny cloud as my subject was walking towards the centre of the stadium. At this moment, the lighting in the shot became so gorgeous that I actually had to rush through my camera bag, grab the right lens, clip it on to the right camera and snap the picture before that tiny cloud passed. It is fun to point out that my subject was actually unaware I was about to take pictures. This is as candid as it gets.

Equipment

I shot this surprisingly on the first camera I could grab from the bag, which was not exactly a photo camera, it was the A7S with a 16-35 f4 Zeiss lens.

Inspiration

As i saw my subject walking in the middle of the Stadium to set up his drone, I noticed the lines were perfect symmetrical with the background and thought it could be nice to capture this candid moment. I think I managed to put burst on to snap a few pictures before he actually made it to the centre.

Editing

There was some editing involved, I used lightroom and one of my many presets. I wanted to give it more of a vintage look as we were in the desert and I thought a western would look somewhat like this.

In my camera bag

I am a Sony lover. I usually would have 2 Sony A7III's a Sony A7SII and A Sony A7S for video. My lenses consist mostly of Tamron 28-75 2.8, A Zeiss 16-35 F4 and a Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 for portraits.

Feedback

Honestly just go with the moment. Obviously I usually prefer more candid shots, this one just happened to be capture at the perfect time. Then again, I always carry my camera on me in case a nice photo op comes along.
