Behind The Lens

Location

Watsontown Pennsylvania along the shore of the Susquehanna River. I had just finished photographing my daughter and her fiancé about 100 yards downstream from the bridge.

Time

Just before sunset.

Lighting

I knew shooting into the sun could cause a loss of detail in the bridge, so I was careful to bracket my exposure. Since I was shooting directly into the sunlight I took advantage of positioning the angel of the lens to find just the right amount of lens flare.

Equipment

This is one of my older images I captured when I had a Sony A350. Shot this handheld.

Inspiration

I was photographing my daughter and her fiancés engagement pictures. At the end of the shoot I glanced over at the newly finished bridge and saw the beautiful wild flowers and the amazing light coming from the setting sun.

Editing

I was viewing some of my older images and decided to reprocess this image file. I spent a lot time evening out the sky and bringing out the clouds. I wanted to be sure to maintain some detail in the bridge without sacrificing the blacks. I use several editing tools. I always import my RAW files to Lightroom and make a few adjustments. After that I am in Topaz Studio where I spend the most time post-processing. I end up with some finishing touches in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I shoot with a Nikon D850 and a Nikon D700 that has been converted to IR (infared). I have a large selection of Nikon ED AF and AF-S lenses as well as adapters to use older Canon FD mount manual focus lenses. I also use a Sony A7R mirrorless. I only use vintage C mount lenses with my Sony. My favorite C mount brands are Kinoptik, Angeniuex, Cooke, Wollensak and Birns & Sawyer Hollywood lenses. These lenses were designed for 16mm cine cameras. I use these lenses for the amazing creamy bokeh they create.

Feedback

Bracketing my exposure was very helpful when I created this image. My over brackets allowed my to keep more detail in the bridge.
