Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken just outside of the Town of Banff in Alberta Canada on a fairway at the Banff Springs Golf Course. I was on my way through the golf course to find a herd of elk I had seen outside the golf course the previous day. You may notice a little dirt on his antlers. When I first arrived he was laying down in the cool grass where he took a moment to scrap his antlers in the sod. Needless to say he did not replace his divots :)
Time
I had my nephew and his son with me at about 8 A.M. as we were on our way to find an elk herd I had seen the day before. There was a commotion of vehicles and people along the side of the road so I stopped and this nice bull was showing off to his enthusiastic audience. Of course, the cow elk in his herd were impressed too!
Lighting
It was ideal lighting in the early morning as the sun was still behind the mountain peaks casting a soft light on the elk. The dark forest background was perfect to highlight the bright crown of antlers on his head.
Equipment
I was using a Canon 80D with a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens, hand held.
Inspiration
I actually took a whole set of photos as this bull strutted and presented numerous poses. This majestic creature and the setting demanded I stop and take photos.
Editing
There is minimal post processing including mostly color balancing and a little brightening in the shadows.
In my camera bag
In addition to my Canon 80D I also carry a Sigma 24-70mm and Tokina 11-16mm and a MeFoto tripod/monopod.
Feedback
My camera was out of its bag and sitting in the back seat of the car ready to shoot. It was a good thing too, because we had not yet arrived at our intended destination when we came across this bull and his herd. Having my equipment ready allowed me to maximize the situation and get more shots and numerous poses. Also, having a powerful telephoto lens allowed me to stay back at a safe distance and still get close. These are large powerful animals guarding their herd during the rut (mating) and can be aggressive if threatened.
