Behind The Lens

Location

I had spent an enjoyable day taking photos at the end of the runway at RAF Lakenheath UK of the many USAF F-15E Strike Eagles on training sorties , my party was just about to pack up ready for a 200 mile drive back home when this rare and dramatic sunset happened. We were all very impressed , I have seen nothing like it before or since. Note in shot is the air brake deployed to slow the fighter jet down on landing.

Time

This sunset happened on 13th ?November ?2013 at ??16:16:14 as a flight of 6 x USAF F-15E returned to base at Lakenheath. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time that day.

Lighting

The colours on this photo are not enhanced in any way. Apart from a crop and a touch of Clarity in Lightroom

Equipment

At that time my only camera was a Sony DSC HX200V bridge camera , which served me well , especially at concerts until it died in October 2019. This shot was hand held , with no flash.

Inspiration

On an Autumn evening when we were packing to travel back home this sunset made us all watch in awe as the reds and oranges deepened to produce one of the most memorable sunsets i've ever seen. We struck lucky as a flight of F-15E Strike Eagles returned to base after a sortie. I shot as many shot's as i could with this shot standing out as one of the best.

Editing

Not even shot in RAW , this JPG was cropped and some Clarity added to bring out the runway lines , basicly the photo required very little work in Lightroom. What you see is what i got on the back of the camera.

In my camera bag

For aviation shots i normally carry a pair of Nikon D5200 attached to a Sigma 18-300 and a Sigma 150-500

Feedback

Best advice here is if you're on a day shoot , always hang around until Sunset , you never know what you will get.
