Was the home of Daniel Smith who served as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War and later a US Senator. The land he built on was his payment for serving in the war.
The house was begun in 1784 and completed 1791. He was surveying the Tennessee state boundaries during this time period also. He had a family with a daughter that had fallen for the Donelson boy from across the Cumberland River. And he for her as well. One night his older sister and her husband crossed the river to help brother elope with the Smith girl. So Andrew & Rachel Donelson Jackson were the couple that helped the two young lovers elope. Come to find out Andy was an old romantic himself. They had the Preacher waiting for them to arrive with the young lovers at "The Hermitage". There they were married that night. The square cut rocks in front of the left gate were for the ladies to step into a buggy or mount a horse.
