Behind The Lens

Location
This capture was taken at Lock and Dam 14, Mississippi River South of La Claire, Iowa
Time
It was the second day of my outing to the lock and compared to the day before was not as fruitful then around 2 p.m. things started happening as various eagles started their fish hunting routine and began diving feet first into the icy river for there afternoon treat.
Lighting
This area is know for it's afternoon and golden hour prime shooting time while arriving too early, you are faced with the raising sun until after 1 p.m. when the sun is more to your right and mostly out of frame.
Equipment
for this image, I used a Canon 1D X with a prime Canon 600mm on a tripod.
Inspiration
This area is known be serious eagle photographers as one, if not the best, spot on the Mississippi River for capturing images of flying, perching, eating while perching, playing "drop the fish" games and catching live fish. While I spotted my target getting ready to make the dive to the water for its meal, I was not sure if the eagle was closed enough for a good shot. Using ISO 400 (cloud less day) 1/250 sec at f/7.1 with shutter priority (did not want to go too slow and get a blurred image) I took my shot.
Editing
Because of the brightness of the day, the post processing was mostly cropping, lightening the shallows and some sharpness.
In my camera bag
When eagle hunting, I usually use as a minimum two (Canon 1Dx 1Dx Mk II or 7D Mk II) cameras. One with the prime 600mm and when the bird is flying towards me, switching to the Canon 100-400mm for close range and hand held for more movement control where as the prime would be too much glass.
Feedback
Prepare! Before leaving the house, check your camera's firmware for any changes. Use available resources for area conditions such as settings for birds in flight for your camera, construction closings, wind, clouds and temperature. Know your equipment before hitting the road. You do not want to try using your new camera at the site or learn how better to follow your target with the new long lens. On site, make sure you know where your fresh batteries and mem cards are. Turn round to see what action may be happening behind you. Last, don't get stuck on one subject. Just because you are looking for eagles, don't pass up the image of a pelican opening his lips for a big fish. Most of all, have fun.
