Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard. I live in the country, so it's full of wildlife, flowers, and insects.

Time

I believe this photo was taken in the middle of the afternoon of a pretty hot day with full sun.

Lighting

The sun was the only lighting used in this photograph. It was a hot, sunny day and it was mid-afternoon, so lighting was all natural and still pretty good.

Equipment

The equipment used to take this lucky, handheld shot was a Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera and a Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens. I didn't use a flash or any other equipment.

Inspiration

I wanted to try to take some insect photos and noticed some bees on the flowers, so I grabbed the camera and macro lens and started taking some photos. As luck would have it, this particular bee ended up flying towards the camera as my camera was trying to find focus at the same time and I just started clicking hoping that I got at least one to turn out. It's not the most clear photo in the world, but what was captured is surprising. The bee almost has an angry face that some say "looks like an angry old man". I was happy to have been able to capture this head on photo.

Editing

I just did some simple post-processing in Lightroom. I cropped the image a little, and did a few "normal" adjustments to make the photo stand out more and have a little more oomph. I don't believe I used any editing presets on this image.

In my camera bag

The equipment that I am going to have in my bag is going to depend on what I am planning on photographing. All the equipment I own to capture my photography is my Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera and my three lenses: Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS (great for portraits and macros), Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II (really good for action shots because it's focus is so fast), and recently I have mostly been keeping the Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 attached to my camera and loving it for wildlife and other creepy crawlies that aren't as likely to move too fast.

Feedback

I definitely would recommend keeping that shutter speed up high and adjust the other settings to account for that and take some practice shots to test the color and adjust the settings until you get it to your liking. A lens that can focus fast is ideal, I used a macro lens that let me get close, but it didn't have as fast of a focus and that is probably a little bit of where I went wrong of why my photo isn't as sharp as I'd like it. I hope you are able to learn something from me and are inspired to get out there and take some photos. Have fun!!
