Banganga, the holy tank in Mumbai, India around which hundreds of temples exist, is considered very holy by devout Hindus. Mythology and Scriptures hundreds of years old have a mention of this tank. It is said that Lord Rama in search of his wife Sita who was kidnapped by the demon king Ravana of Sri Lanka passed this spot when his brother Lakshmana could not control his thirst. Mumbai being very close to the sea even then, could provide only salty water. Rama shot an arrow (Ban) into the ground and out sprang the holy river Ganges (Ganga) from hundreds of miles away, water of which quenched Lakshmana's thirst. Hence the name 'Ban-Ganga' and importance for the tank. With salty sea water all around, only this tank just a few yards away has springs of sweet water.
