Behind The Lens

Location
This image was taken when I was at Humber College for Creative Photography in one of their studios.
Time
I can't remember but it was a studio shoot.
Lighting
I believe I used Broncolor lights, with one beauty dish, two strip boxes, a ring light and a soft box for fill during this shoot. I can't really remember the exact setup for this particular image because I changed it up a lot throughout the shoot but it looks like just a beauty dish, a fill and two lights through reflectors to blow out the background, granted I cropped the background out for this.
Equipment
It was taken with a Nikon d800 and I believe a Nikon 85mm f1.8. I did use a 70-200 throughout the shoot as well.
Inspiration
The model and I were huge David Bowie fans and we wanted to do something in light of passing earlier that year.
Editing
Everything was shot tethered to Capture One and then later edited in Photoshop.
In my camera bag
I don't shoot portraits in studios very often but my ideal setup is 2-4 strip boxes (2 for side highlights and the other two to shape catch lights), other times I keep it simple with a beauty dish and reflector for fill. As for cameras, I'm a Nikon shooter but any camera will usually do just fine. I believe in light above all gear. As for lenses, I use a Nikon 50mm, Nikon 85mm, Sigma 105mm, Sigma 70-200mm, 15mm Venus Optics Wide Angle Macro, Nikon 24mm tilt shift, and a cheap Nikon 24-85mm kit lens that has never failed me.
Feedback
Keep shooting and experimenting. It doesn't matter what subject you're photographing as long as you keep working at it. For something like this in particular, blow out the background and bean your subject with as much light as possible without losing detail on their skin (although I blew out some of the skin detail intentionally in post). It was inspired by the late Brian Duffy who took the original images of David Bowie for his Aladdin Sane album. It's easily one of the most recognized images of David Bowie and has been copied numerous times.
