Behind The Lens

Location
This was just shot in the backyard of a family member's home in Chatham, Ontario
Time
I can't remember specifically but it was in the harsh afternoon sun.
Lighting
I was just messing around with a new lens at the time and balanced a speed light modified by a Gary Fong with the natural harsh light.
Equipment
This would have been shot with a Nikon D800 using a Venus Optics 15mm wide angle macro tilt shift lens and a SB910 speed lite. The trick to achieving this look is the lens and the proximity to the subject. Because of the macro capabilities of the lens you can get very close to the subject. By doing so the speed lite, modified by a Gary Fong, acts almost like a beauty dish because it almost sits above the subject's head. The challenge in taking this shot is that the lens is a manual lens and kids rarely sit still long enough to get an image in focus using such a lens.
Inspiration
Honestly I was just experimenting with the lens and trying different things. The lens used is not a portrait lens by any means but you can always push it in a different direction than it was designed for.
Editing
Oh this was definitely photoshopped. I expanded his eyes with the liquify tool to give him a hyper exaggerated look. Aside from that I went heavy on the colour saturation to help tell the story of a kid being a kid.
In my camera bag
It honestly changes from shoot to shoot. It depends what I'm hired to do. These days I use a Nikon Z7 but before that it was a Nikon D800. I generally like using 85 primes and 70-200s for portraits. If I'm balancing artificial light with ambient light I'll use various Godox light, from speed lites to strobes. For interiors I use a Nikon 24mm tilt-shift, 14-30mm f4 and a 24-70mm f2.8. Product shots are normally shot with a 24-70mm f2.8, 105mm macro, or even an 85mm prime. I do a lot of landscape imagery as well and without a doubt I pack ND filters, polarizers, and softening filter by Lee Filters.
Feedback
Honestly it is just a matter of learning how to balance artificial light with natural light. In the case of this image all I had on me was a speed lite, therefore the artificial light can't travel far in such harsh natural light. So the short focusing distance of the lens was key to getting the look and and type of light.
